Here's what we've been up to in first grade!

We honored Martin Luther King Jr. Day by drawing portraits of MLK and reading non-fiction books about him as well as other great picture books highlighting how beautiful our differences are. We talked about how our world is a better place when we treat each other with kindness, love and respect.

Students have been working hard on some opinion writing! They each chose a favorite book and wrote a book recommendation. When our bulletin board is complete, we will enjoy hot cocoa, read our books and have a PJ day!

Here is our math Daily 3 choice board. After whole group lessons and Calendar Time, students work through the Daily 3, independently. This allows me to conference with students or meet students in small groups to target specific skills or complete assessments.

Here is our Daily 5 choice board. Choices are updated weekly and sometimes daily. Students have learning goals as well as choices listed under each Daily 5 activity.

In science, we have been exploring weather using an awesome resource called Mystery Science! Students did an experiment where they examined clues about how clouds look and feel to discover what they're made of and how they form. Students observed what happened when water changed from liquid to gas. In another 'mystery' students learned how to make predictions by observing clouds and their changes. They created a small book to record their notes and used it to practice storm prediction.

Today we started our next Picturing Writing Book, Weather Poetry. Students painted clouds today and we will begin writing simile poems tomorrow. Stay tuned for paintings and a final product at the end of the year!
